How to Choose the Best New Heat Pump in Las Vegas, NV

February 13, 2021

The versatility of heat pumps has allowed them to grow more popular over the years. Most people know about air conditioners and furnaces, but you may not know that heat pumps can heat, cool and decrease your energy bill. Here are some things to keep in mind as you do your research to decide which heat pump is best for you.

The Right Heat Pump

A heat pump uses refrigerant, just as an air conditioner does, to cool and heat your home. Before buying a heat pump, look at factors such as your climate, available energy in your area and your home’s insulation. Cold areas with temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit will need other heat sources.

A heat pump uses electricity instead of combustible fuel. In a cold area with abundant natural gas, it might be cheaper to use a conventional furnace. In a climate above the balance point — where heat output equals heat input — your heat pump can be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 times hotter than a furnace with the same energy cost.

Heat Pump Efficiency

The difference in heat pumps’ efficiency has to do with the various technology options that come with them. Some have variable-capacity controls that allow you to run the blower and compressor at the levels you want. Heat pumps are usually quieter than other HVAC systems, and you can maintain them just like other systems.

The federal energy guide label on heat pumps allows you to see the highs and lows of a particular model. The SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating for cooling and heating. The HSPF is the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor for heating alone.

Heating and Cooling

Setting up a zoned heating and cooling system in your house is the latest trend to lower energy use. With zoned thermostats in different areas, you can control the heating and cooling of each room. You can add various innovations to your system to make it even more efficient with this type of system.

Heat Pump Innovations

Normally, a heat pump compressor can only run at full power, but a two-speed compressor lets you change the settings. Variable-speed motors allow for a consistent air velocity and save you money on your energy bill. High-end heat pumps have a “desuperheater” that uses energy waste to heat water three times faster.
